Creating accessible spaces is about more than meeting building codes—it’s about ensuring veterans and people with disabilities can live, receive care, and participate in their communities with dignity and independence.
Recently, PVA Architects attended the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design in San Diego, California, joining more than 15,000 architecture, engineering, and construction professionals from across the country. The conference provided an opportunity to explore the latest innovations in healthcare design, universal accessibility, and inclusive building practices while strengthening partnerships that help advance accessible communities nationwide.
Throughout the event, the PVA Architects team participated in educational sessions focused on healthcare environments, accessibility standards, and emerging design trends that improve the lives of veterans and individuals with disabilities.
Touring the New San Diego VA SCI/D Center
While in San Diego, the team also visited the new San Diego VA Medical Center’s Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI/D) Acute Care and Long-Term Care Center, a state-of-the-art facility scheduled to open later this year.
The new center represents a significant investment in veteran healthcare and will provide:
- Expanded long-term care capacity for veterans in California
- Private patient rooms
- Modern rehabilitation and therapy spaces
- An aquatic therapy center
- Accessible outdoor rooftop garden
- Enhanced services for veterans living with spinal cord injuries and disorders
The facility will also become the future home of PVA’s Cal-Diego Chapter, further strengthening support services for local veterans.
Building a More Accessible Future
Projects like the new San Diego VA SCI/D Center demonstrate how thoughtful, accessible design can transform healthcare experiences for veterans and their families. By collaborating with architects, healthcare leaders, and accessibility experts, PVA continues to advocate for environments that promote independence, wellness, and inclusion.
At Bayou Gulf States PVA, we applaud the work of PVA Architects and look forward to seeing veterans benefit from this outstanding facility when it opens.
Together, we remain committed to advancing accessibility—not only in healthcare facilities, but in every community where veterans live, work, and thrive.
