At Bayou Gulf States PVA, advocacy is at the heart of everything we do. While adaptive sports, peer support, and community programs empower veterans every day, protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities remains one of our highest priorities.
One important piece of legislation currently before Congress is the 2026 Air Carrier Access Amendments Act, which aims to strengthen protections for airline passengers with disabilities and ensure greater accountability when accessibility standards are not met.
Why This Matters
Although federal law requires airlines to accommodate passengers with disabilities, many travelers continue to experience significant barriers, including:
- Damage to wheelchairs and other mobility equipment
- Inadequate boarding and deplaning assistance
- Unsafe transfers between wheelchairs and aircraft seating
- Limited accountability when accessibility rights are violated
For veterans and individuals who rely on mobility devices, these challenges are more than an inconvenience—they can result in injuries, disrupted travel, missed medical appointments, and loss of independence.
What the Legislation Would Do
The proposed 2026 Air Carrier Access Amendments Act would strengthen disability rights by:
- Increasing enforcement by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
- Allowing patterns of disability discrimination to be referred to the U.S. Department of Justice.
- Creating a private right of action, giving individuals the ability to seek legal remedies when their rights are violated.
- Holding airlines accountable for repeated accessibility failures.
These changes would help ensure that accessibility is recognized as a fundamental civil right rather than simply a customer service issue.
How You Can Help
Every voice matters when it comes to protecting the rights of veterans and people with disabilities.
We encourage our members, families, caregivers, and supporters to contact their U.S. Senators and Representatives and ask them to support the 2026 Air Carrier Access Amendments Act. Your advocacy can help create safer, more accessible, and more equitable air travel for everyone.
Together, we can build a future where every veteran and every person with a disability can travel with dignity, confidence, and independence.
Bayou Gulf States PVA remains committed to advocating for policies that improve accessibility, protect civil rights, and strengthen the quality of life for all veterans living with spinal cord injuries and disorders.
